We’ve tried to keep it as simple as possible containing the whole site in one page. If you’re looking for something particular, just type what you’re looking for into the search box to the left and press enter. This will allow you to filter through all of my posts as well as any comments left by other visitors. You can also filter categories by clicking next to "All Categories" under "Menu" and choosing one. Click here for a Video Tour of this site.

If you see an image like the one below, you can click on the triangle to hear some music and advance or move back in the track by clicking on the title when it opens. All you have to do is send me a Wav file of your project and I do the rest. You get 12 tracks of real drums at a reasonable price. Here are some examples of drum tracks I have recorded by sharing files on the internet.

The First is bass player Anthony Setola's jazzy instrumental version of XTC's Chalkhills and Children. The second is a rockin song by Mark Cullen. The third is a latin tune with Francisco Loyo. The forth is a pop song by Billy Batstone.

I'm teach drum set for Biola University and I have a Christian Musicians Summit this fall. Still playing for Harvest on occasion.

I love what I do and want to get out more often playing locally. A lot of people have told me that they don't call because they think I'm too busy. Though this is the case sometimes, I'm never too swamped to take a phone call! A copy of my calendar can be viewed below if you want to check my availability for a certain gig or date. Looking forward to hearing from you.

562-964-8394.

Click Calendar to see my schedule.

Contact me at eieiowens@mac.com if you are interested in lessons.

This fall I will begin teaching at Biola University. I'm looking forward to starting a drum set program with the students there.
Fernando Ortega Gig

Fernando Ortega Live

I have spent a lot of time with Fernando on the road. I think he is one of the most talented and professional performers I have worked with. I loved playing these tunes. It was a challenge to recreate all the percussion and drum parts that were on the CD's in real time with no loops. These mp3's were taken from a performance in Knoxville, TN. The band is Fernando Ortega (lead vocal, accordion and piano) Rich Nibbie (guitars), Trinidad Sanchez (basses), Johnathan Noel (backing vocals) and me playing all the percussion and drums. The songs below are Dragonfly, California Town, Old Girl and a little medley of When the Coyote Comes, Noonday Devil, and Sleepless Night.

Our Crestline Cabin

We have a 3 bedroom 2 bath place in Crestine that we rent to friends. Crestline is about 20 minuets from San Bernardino up Hyw 18 and about 10 miles before you get to Lake Arrowhead. We are at about 4700 feet in elevation so we don't get that much snow. These pictures were taken last winter when the area really got dumped on. It has a nice deck with forest views overlooking a seasonal creek. We charge only 50 dollars a night. The vibe is: when you rent it you leave it just as you found it. A lot of people bring their own towels and linens but there is a washer and dryer in it if you want to wash stuff up there. It isn't used nearly enough, especially in fall and spring (which is the best time of year be up there) so please contact me if you're interested.

We had a day to look over the music and spent a couple 3 hour sessions recording it. Paul Freeman and Bob Wackerman from Audio By The Bay liked the way it came out so much that they flew out the two leads from the show on Broadway to sing on it. I had heard from Julie (my wife) and Jana (my daughter) how much they loved the music for this show before I tracked it, but it was during this session that I realized how outstanding the score is. Julie and I have seen it twice (and I watched it once from the pit at the Pantages) and I think it is one of the most creative productions I have ever seen. It is definitely worth checking out if you ever get the chance. Here are a couple musical snippets from our version for Universal Japan.

Jester had so may influences it caused us to write music that was all over the map stylistically. A bit of a problem considering most people were listening to disco.
I played with Thomas Dolby and the Lost Toy People and we toured all over the world after we recorded Aliens Ate My Buick. The Lost Toy People were Mike Kapitan on keyboards, Larry Treadwell on guitar, Terry Jackson on bass, Laura Creamer on vocals and perc. and yours truly on drums and electronic perc. Here are a couple snippets of us playing Hot Sauce and Budapest By Blimp live. The video below that is something I put together from a concert we did for the record industry in April of 88.

I had the pleasure of playing a set with Lincoln Brewster for a benefit for a Lutheran High School in Orange County. He wanted to do an "unplugged" set so I brought a little set I use for that kind of stuff. Little did I know Lincoln's version of an unplugged set is still rockin' really hard. My little kit barely held up but it was a lot of fun. Lincoln on Guitars and vocals and Norm Stockton on Bass and me on my little kit.

I will post new articles here when they come out.

Flam Rudiments Over Six

In this continuing series we are working our way through rudiments over different foot patterns. Last time we practiced flam rudiments over 4/4 foot patterns. Today we will take all those flam rudiments and play them over a foot pattern in 6/8.
When playing a flam make sure the first strike (the grace note) is a very small stroke compared to the second note of the flam. Pay close attention to the sticking because it is the only thing that differentiates the flam accents from the swiss triplets. The flam paradiddles will be the most challenging because of the “over the barline” feel. There are a few different foot patterns so use them all under each flam exercise. You should make up your own foot patterns as well.
Practice slow at first and always use a metronome.

This project gave me the chance to stretch a bit leading to some interesting grooves. See www.robstermusic.com for more info.

Here is a bit of the title cut.

It is very cool music that has a very organic feel. Anne's love of Christ really shows up here. There are a couple grooves in the first two tunes that I really enjoyed playing. I know Jeff and Anne from Franklin Graham events.
